House Dems Give Teachers, Law Enforcement and State Workers a Raise

RICHMOND, VA—House Democrats yesterday voted to pass a budget that included raises for teachers, law enforcement officers and state workers.

“This was not a perfect budget, but we were proud to fight for a budget that included raises for teachers, law enforcement officers and state workers,” said House Democratic Leader David J. Toscano. “House Democrats kicked off this legislative session with an aggressive economic agenda to create jobs and give Virginians a raise, and we’re pleased that we’ve accomplished that for our hardworking public servants. We are disappointed, however, that House Republicans killed three different proposals that would have raised the minimum wage for thousands of low-wage workers across the Commonwealth. We look forward to adding more Democrats to our numbers this November who can help us give more Virginians a raise next year.”

“We are pleased that this budget includes raises for the men and women who educate our children and keep our streets safe,” said Caucus Chair Charniele Herring. “These dedicated public servants deserve to be able to support their families while also saving for the future. However, there are still too many working families who are living paycheck-to-paycheck, struggling to make ends meet. No one who works forty hours per week should live in poverty, and Republicans must be held accountable in November for killing legislation that would give our low-wage workers a raise as well.”
